The Smiths Founder and Guitarist Johnny Marr Comes to VooDoo Lounge
English singer-songwriter and guitarist Johnny Marr is scheduled to perform live in concert on the US leg of his “Comet” tour at VooDoo Lounge in Kansas City, MO on Wednesday, May 15.
Marr rose to fame as the guitarist and co-writer of post-punk group The Smiths along with Morrissey, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce between 1982 and 1987. The band’s sound was very distinct with his jangle pop style of of playing, which also led to his accolade as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Following that stint, he spent much of his career working with bands such as The Pretenders, The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse and The Cribs. Marr is also a copious session musician and has worked with the Talking Heads, Hans Zimmer and Blondie.
In today’s era, Marr is working on his solo career having released three records in the past six years—his most recent, “Call the Comet” (2018)—and even an autobiography, “Set the Boy Free” (2016). His setlist is sure to include some of those classic tunes from The Smiths, as well as his modern solo work. Joining him on stage are fellow bandmates James Doviak (guitar/keyboard), Iwan Gronow (bass) and Jack Mitchell (drums).
