Iconic blues rock band Grand Funk Railroad returned to Star Pavilion inside of Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, MO on September 18, 2021. Live on stage and in concert were founding members Don Brewer (drums/lead vocals) and Mel Schacher (bass guitar) plus Max Carl (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Bruce Kulick (lead guitar/vocals) and Tim Cashion (keyboard/vocals). In front of an ecstatic crowd, GFR dazzled fans with its arena rock style of music, which gained the band its notoriety for more than 50 years along with those classic hits like “Some Kind of Wonderful” and “We’re an American Band.” The set even included a phenomenal performance of “Second Chance,” the biggest 38 Special tune in which Carl sang lead when he was part of the group in the late ’80s. As always, the crowd was hot throughout the entire set. The long play and incredible sounds of the “I’m Your Captain” live version left fans in a daze and could have served as the closing song, but that almighty chart-topper came in and sent them home on cloud nine.
