Kauffman Center Presents Featured Mary Chapin Carpenter & Shawn Colvin on October 10, 2019
Acclaimed singer-songwriters Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin performed live in concert at the coveted Helzberg Hall inside of Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Kansas City, MO on October 10, 2019. Bestowing a 30-plus year friendship, the duo shared stories while treating fans to acoustic renditions of each others’ songs, as well as some of their favorites.
Having played with her full band and the Kansas City symphony on separate occasions, Carpenter is certainly no stranger to the Kauffman Center. She was welcomed back yet once again with open arms for this view inside her “living room” with her dear comrade. At one point, she referenced the Bruce Springsteen 1984 song “Bobby Jean” to describe their relationship—”we liked the same music, we liked the same bands!”
The set opened with sweet, amazing cover of the 1989 hit “The End of the Innocence” by Don Henley and featured joint and solo performances. It was only the second stop with the reignited 2013 tour having kicked off the previous evening in Denver. Carpenter was off the road prior writing songs for a new album and shared her new single, “Our Man Walter Cronkite.” The lineup was on paper, but that didn’t stop Colvin from accepting a request to play her own 1989 song, “Shotgun Down the Avalanche.”
Carpenter and Colvin dazzled on both the mics and acoustic guitars throughout the entire night. The performances were vehement with tears even seen wiped from Colvin’s face as she listened to Carpenter sing “The Things That We Are Made Of.” Combined with hysterical tales such as Colvin peeing on Paul McCartney’s childhood house and her early career criticism from Sting for not tuning her guitar before a show, it tugged at the heartstrings of everyone in the crowd. Closing out the night, they played the Carpenter early-’90s cover of the Lucinda Williams song “Passionate Kisses” before walking of stage hand-in-hand.
