Mickey Gilley & Johnny Lee Performed Live at Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, MO on July 13, 2018
Legendary country and pop music crossover artists Mickey Gilley & Johnny Lee brought their Urban Cowboy reunion show to Star Pavilion inside of Ameristar Casino Hotel Kansas City on July 13, 2018. The two hitmakers were prominently featured in the film “Urban Cowboy” (1980) starring John Travolta with Gilley’s nightclub in Pasadena, TX as the central locale. They kicked off the reunion tour earlier in the year with a multitude of shows scheduled at Mickey Gilley Theatre in Branson, MO.
Backed by the Urban Cowboy band, the evening served up three sets with Johnny Lee opening the show followed by Mickey Gilley and then a joint performance of tunes straight from the film. Johnny’s set included ’80s hits such as “One in a Million,” “Pickin’ Up Strangers,” “Cherokee Fiddle” and “Hey Bartender” while Mickey’s set included hits from the decade like “You Don’t Know Me,” “Paradise Tonight,” “True Love Ways” and “Candy Man.” Together, they danced and sang covering songs from artist in the soundtrack plus their own hits, Johnny’s “Lookin’ for Love” and Gilley’s “Stand By Me.”
It was a totally nostalgic and heartfelt evening as the two legends graciously shared slices of their life among an awe-inspired audience. Truly transcendent, fans of every era showed up to pack out Star Pavilion. The evening was an experience one only hopes to live again and again. Thankfully for the Kansas City faithful, we have several chances to catch Mickey and Johnny together just 222 miles south of Ameristar.
